How Much Snow Can A Roof Hold?
our house was built in the early 90′s. and we have had a lot of really heavy dense snow in the last few days. there is approx 12-15 inches of snow sitting on our roof right now. and by the end of the week we are to expect another 12-15 on top of it. so i don’t know if we need to do something so we don’t have the roof colapse. we are in north idaho by the way.

That much snow is really heavy and hard on your home.Get it cleared off as safely and as soon as possible. Any more snow on your roof is asking for trouble. Usually in the snow belt, roofs are built A- frame style for the heavy accumulations of snow to slide off by itself.

if i thought it were safe to do so I would go up and shovel some off. but that is me….. you might want to check the local building codes those will give you some idea of the load a roof has to withstand……

typical code would be 40b/sq’.
If it’s built to code u should be good wo/ having it shoveled.
PS: I live in NE Wa.

all trusses are engineered for a snow load but it would help to have the information of your trusses (like pitch, 2x materail, span and spacing) to help estimate what the engineered loads are for your trusses.

That kind of snow is common in Idaho.
Your roof was likely designed for it.
It’s extra insulation.
Relax.
